Wintry Mix Update

Local Update...
Wintry Mix To Continue; Strong Winds Increasing...

Just a quick update this afternoon. Things are looking on cue for the wintry mix today, the only real change is to put up a Wind Advisory for The Champlain Valley, and near by areas, and Rutland, and Bennington Counties in Vermont. Winds are currently in the 15-25 MPH range with gusts ranging from 30-40MPH. Winds will continue to increase in the Champlain Valley and near by areas into the 15-30MPH range with gusts 45-50MPH. Across much of the area these winds are from the south, so tempratures will continue to rise. The entire Champlain Valley is already hovering around the freezing mark with some areas above freezing in the Southern Champlain Valley. So for precipitation a mix of Light Snow, Sleet, and some freezing rain will change over to mainly rain by this evening, as temps rise. Sleet, and Freezing Rain will likely hold longer in Northeastern Vermont, but not long enough to issue any Winter Weather Advisory at this time. For the St. Lawrence Valley of New York, its a whole other ball game. Winds continue to be light and from the east, which is not helping warm the area very much. Infact temps across the entire St. Lawrence Valley right now are in the 20-25F range, colder then the rest of Northern New York. This area will see temps rise some, but may never make it above freezing until tomorrow, if at all. So the Northern St. Lawrence Valley of New York may see a wintry mix for the entire length of the storm, however most precipitation should be light. Still looking at a 3-6 inch snowfall across that area, with ice accumulations around a tenth of an inch, isolated areas may pick up a quarter inch of ice. So I will continue the Winter Weather Advisory for this area.
The National Weather Service in Albany, NY has also issued a Wind Advisory for Bennington, and Windham Counties for winds in the 15-30MPH range with gusts 45-55MPH. As they stated the strongest winds will occur across the North-South oriented valleys. This will be true for the Champlain Valley as well. At this point no official alerts have been issued by the National Weather Service in Burlington, but there is some talk about the possibility of a Wind Advisory later today. Updated maps below. Stay tuned!
