JRWeather Winter Storm Warning In Effect From 3AM Wednesday Until 11AM Thursday...
JRWeather WINTER STORM WARNING
JRWeather has issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of Vermont, and Northern New York From 3AM Wednesday Until 11AM Thursday.
A low pressure system forming over the South Central United States will continue to form, and move Northeast. The parent low pressure center is forecasted to move Northeast, and into Western New York Wednesday and slow significantly. Energy will then transfer to the coast, where a new low pressure system will form off the coast of Southern New England and move into the Canadian Maritimes by Thursday night.
Snow showers should develop late tonight, and steadier snow should move into the region for Wednesday Morning and continue light to moderate and occasionally heavy at times. Snow will taper off to snow showers by late Thursday Morning. Total snow and sleet accumulations by Thursday morning should range from 9-12 inches across the Western Slopes of the Northern and Central Green Mountains, and from 5-9 inches across the remainder of Northern New York, and Northern and Central Vermont. Across Southern Vermont Snow and sleet accumulations will range from 3-5 inches, with significant ice accumulations of up to a half inch possible, isolated higher snow totals will occur along the Western slopes of the Southern Green mountains.
A Winter Storm Warning is issued when severe winter weather is likely. In this case the Winter Storm Warning is for moderate to heavy amounts of snow, and ice. Travel will become dangerous Wednesday into Wednesday Night, so if you must travel, use extreme caution.
DISCUSSION
A significant storm system is currently underway across the Southern United States up into the Mid-Atlantic Region. Ice Storm Warnings, Winter Storm Warnings, Winter Weather Advisories, as well as many flood alerts stretch from Louisiana all the way to Maine. (Obviously the flood alerts are back to the South and West, and the Winter Alerts are to the North and East.)
For our region, I have issued a Winter Storm Warning for 5-9 inches of snow in across Northern New York, and Northern and Central Vermont, with a period of sleet Wednesday. Across Southern Vermont a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for 3-5 inches of snow, with up to a half inch of ice. The track of this storm will be one we are very familiar with. The parent low moves west of the Appalachians, and a second low develops, or tries to develop off the Southern New England coast, just a bit to late, to result in an extremely significant snow storm. This situation will hold true once again. Either way you can expect precipitation to overspread the entire region from Southwest to Northeast overnight tonight. Snow should fall everywhere for a time before changing to a period of Sleet across much of the region, and some significant freezing rain across southern Vermont. As the secondary low pressure system tries to develop it will help pull some colder air back in and change everything back over to snow. The storm should taper off and have pretty much come to an end across the entire area by Thursday afternoon, the only exception is the western slopes of the Northern, and Central Green mountains where snow showers will likely continue into Friday afternoon.
If your out traveling Wednesday, the morning commute should be fine. Travel conditions will deteriorate throughout the day, and by evening commute, travel will be dangerous.
